Why is everyone talking about “shorting tether”? It’s been a rough year for crypto. And in this chaos.. There’s a massive bet happening under our noses... one that could profit off the total collapse of crypto... Shorting Tether... The world's largest stablecoin.
Hedge funds are betting hundreds of millions that Tether will lose its peg... Crashing completely. That might have something to do with the fact that just a few months ago, investors watched another Stablecoin, UST, do just that. Many investors think Tether is next in a long line of failed stablecoins.
There have been persistent questions about who owns the company behind the coin, and whether the business actually has the assets it claims to own. The assets that are supposed to back the coin.
With all that, shorting Tether, meaning betting that it will fall, may seem like a good bet.
But hold on... because Tether is a very different digital currency than the fallen UST, and, for better or worse, Tether plays a critical role in the crypto space.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst Not the first time Tether has been in the news, and not surprising that this headline appears after the crash of Luna/Terra etc. But in all these years Tether has manoeuvred and gone ahead, always defending itself from accusations of not having enough collateral 1:1 with USD. Also many crypto transactions are done using Tether, which makes it an inmportant part of the crypto logistics or structure. According to this video, hedge managers are betting for its fall as never before. What do they know that we don't? Maybe watching this explains it.
