Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst Africa is not a country. It is diverse with its cultures, natural resources and people. Prevalent bad news from Western media about the continent have covered that there are many more good things which even in Europe or US are scarce. And one things about being rich in Africa. If you are rich, you are really really rich. Not necessarily because of scams, frauds, or corruption (there are, like everywhere in the world) but families who have built their fortunes through hard work reinvesting in their countries too. To be a politician in Africa is a risky career, but if you are successful, like in any other country, you also get your money. In some countries is through the traditional "now is my time to eat" system whereby if you are now holding the power you need to take the chance and make sure when you leave the leadership your life, your family and your people are economically protected. This system abounds in countries where social security systems don't guarantee good pensions or protection. Thus in the case of this podcast, how much an African country Head earns? They have all kind of salaries and perks, and almost all Africa countries will publish their public servants' salaries including the ones of Presidents. Are these salaries correct when maybe the majority of population has huge economic problems to live not just up to the end of the month, but even to get the money for next day meal? Or when, even if population is having a better life, the country itself has core financial problems? And now, looking at the other side, what about salaries for any Head of State around the world. When is a salary good enough and when is a scandal? Some will remember Sankara, Burkina Faso's late President who tried to live as much as possible like his fellow citizens and was killed, or Nyerere who made sure none of his kids were going to foreign schools, only pubic schools, and didnt accept "special" gifts from anyone. Anyway, rich people is necessary in Africa like anywhere in the world if they are able to reinvest and share for the development of their nations.
