Across Europe, people are struggling to pay the bills as inflation soars to levels not seen in decades. Prices had already been rising before the war in Ukraine as consumers began spending again after the lifting of pandemic restrictions. But Russia`s invasion of the country and the resulting pressure on gas supplies has pushed an uncomfortable situation into a full-blown crisis. On this DW Business Special, we speak to reporter Emily Gordine who has been covering the cost-of-living crisis in the UK, as well as to Michael Heise, Chief Economist at HQ Trust. We ask how the continent's most vulnerable people have been coping and what needs to be done now to prevent extreme hardship this winter.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst The economic and financial problems in Europe started before the actual conflict which is defining the present and future of this region. And the conflict itself is impacting the numbers, leading to a higher inflation and worse financial numbers, in the middle of an energy crisis which is developing and, despite promises of European leaders of being prepared, feels like a total chaos for the winter season. We all can imagine the pessimistic outcomes of this situation. But we can also be creative, come out from this more resilient and stronger, as this is working as a wake up call for the EU and other European countries used to good life and thinking themselves the centre of the world due to the history and democracy of the old civilisation. Europeans have forgotten that historically this small part of the world has been living in constant conflict and war, something that interestingly helped to create Western civilisation. Europe is not going to be the same.
