For some, this new reality reflects changing social attitudes and a desire not to have children, but for others, the decision has been taken out of their hands by a range of factors. The latest statistics available reflect the extent to which this has become a global phenomenon. In the US, the birth rate is at a record low and China reported its first population decline in six decades in 2022.

The BBC’s population correspondent Stephanie Hegarty tells host Lucy Hockings that economic concerns are among the most important when it comes to individuals and couples deciding whether or not the time is right to have a baby, and discusses how the concept of “male malaise” is impacting fertility rates.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst Fertility is globally dropping, with some exceptions. And the rate may continue dropping from now until the end of the century. Some countries, like South Korea, are already in catastrophical decline which will create a country of old people, no kids, and societal disaster. Mediterranean countries like Spain and Italy are going fast on this track, and even in Africa, traditionally considered the continent where more young people live is slowing the birth rate at the same time people move from rural areas to mega cities. People and scientist give different opinions about the causes, from micro plastics in the food chain to solution, to economic reasons (high cost of raising children), access to contraception and women empowerment, less child mortality rates, etc. There can be even a evolutive design here, who knows Anyway, consequences can be far reaching, from economies struggling to pay healthcare and social security systems, to pensions, less workforce, and a future where a large proportion of births will be occurring in low-income countries, which can displace other cultures. The world is changing too fast.
