Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst “Population collapse” is, according to this marvellous podcast, a looming crisis that could reshape economies, societies, and the global balance of power. But wait, why only 50 years ago scientists were talking about overpopulation being an apocalyptic disaster? So confusing. But good to watch this to better understand what has changed and why less population is worse in the historical circumstances we live now. Birth rates are plummeting worldwide, from Europe to East Asia. Countries like Japan and South Korea are already facing the consequences of aging populations and shrinking workforces. Numbers don’t lie and data is alarming, because of its economic implications: Fewer young people mean fewer workers, taxpayers, and consumers. This could lead to slower economic growth, strained pension systems, and even geopolitical shifts as nations grapple with declining populations. A shrinking population isn’t just an economic issue but also a societal one. Dr. Morland discusses how it could affect everything from healthcare to housing, and even the vibrancy of our communities. Any solution? Well, governments are trying, with more or less success with pro natalist policies imitation reforms (with its own issues) and so on. Bu the key takeaway is that even if this problem seems far from the urgent problems we face not, the reality is that unless we act now we are doomed to a population collapse all around. What do you think?
