While the numbers remain small (around 245 claims in Canada during the first half of 2025) the increase in Americans applying for refugee status signals something deeper like a breakdown in the feeling of safety within parts of the U.S. I think it is taken for granted that the U.S. is a haven but when citizens feel they’ve lost protection at home, it’s a powerful reminder of the fragility of rights. This isn’t just a headline, it’s a call to reexamine how trauma, identity, and policy intersect in shaping who feels safe and who doesn’t.
