As the youngest continent with a rapidly urbanizing population, Africa is leapfrogging traditional infrastructure and deepening regional integration through initiatives such as the Lobito Corridor and the African Continental Free Trade Area. Its reserves of critical minerals are taking on new strategic significance, positioning the continent as an essential partner in global supply chains and industrial growth.

Gregory Peters, Co-Chief Investment Officer of PGIM Fixed Income, joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to weigh in on this week's bond market moves, including a global selloff sparked by a rout in Japan. In the wake of Japan's bond chaos, leaders gathering at Davos were left wondering how long it would take before so-called "bond vigilantes" target what US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calls the “mountain” of US debt. Citadel CEO Ken Griffin told the forum Wednesday that the episode appears to be “a Liz Truss-lite moment,” recalling the UK crisis sparked by tax cuts enacted in 2022 under the-then British prime minister. Former International Monetary Fund First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath said that it’s clear that investors no longer consider the US the secure borrower that it once was. “There are many other markets that were previously considered safe that are no longer safe, and that includes US Treasuries,” she said. Gopinath frequently pointed to America’s budgetary vulnerabilities during her IMF tenure. Peters calls the sentiment "a little melodramatic," and goes on to say that "having a heightened debt-to-GDP with administrative political instability has a tendency of wreaking havoc on the bond market." Peters speaks with Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.

Donald Trump claimed that Nato troops stayed "a little off the front lines" during the war in Afghanistan - sparking outrage in the UK from politicians and veterans' families.

The US president made his comments in an interview with Fox News in which he reiterated his suggestion that Nato would not support America if asked.

He said: “We’ve never needed them. They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan … and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

His remarks drew condemnation from across the political spectrum, with critics pointing to the 457 British deaths in Afghanistan and highlighting Mr Trump’s avoidance of military service in Vietnam.

Why does Greenland look the same size as Africa on most world maps? The Mercator Projection, the most common map in classrooms and homes, severely distorts the size of countries, making regions near the poles appear massive while shrinking equatorial areas.

Map projections are the mathematical methods used to represent our spherical Earth on a flat surface. While Mercator's projection was designed for navigation in 1569, it's still used in education today, despite its significant size distortions. Google Maps also uses this 450 year old map... because it's still great for navigation. It's just not ideal for teaching spacial concepts.

World globes are an excellent approximation for landmass size, position and proximity. Still, humans desire display on flat surfaces like the display you're reading this text on now. For centuries brilliant minds have attempted to find ways to display the entire world on a flat rectangle with no distortion but thus far, it's yet to be resolved!

Although all world maps are distorted, some are 'much worse' than others, depending on the application. When it comes down to it, we just want you to be informed and have a map you enjoy.

This is not just a territorial dispute. It is a deliberately chosen test of whether coercion can be normalised and then repeated to spread an empire in a way and for an aim that can only be described as evil.

Tech billionaires are planning for a future where humans don’t exist, and they’re already building it.

For decades, tech elites have sold us a shiny future powered by artificial intelligence. But what if the future they’re building doesn’t include us?

I investigated the dangerous worldview known as TESCREALism that has taken hold across the world’s most powerful tech companies, from OpenAI to Tesla. It’s the belief that biological humans are flawed and temporary, and that a post-human future dominated by AGI (artificial general intelligence) is both inevitable and desirable.

Under this ideology, human obsolescence is framed as progress, while billionaires like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, and Mark Zuckerberg prepare to outlive the collapse they are helping to create.
