  • Breaking News! John McAfee: antivirus entrepreneur found dead in Spanish prison ... (theguardian.com)
McAfee’s extradition to the US on tax charges had been approved hours earlier.

The antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in his cell in Spain, hours after the country’s highest court approved his extradition to the United States, where he was wanted on tax-related criminal charges that carry a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Catalan’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, confirmed a report in El País that McAfee, 75, had been found dead in the Brians 2 prison near Barcelona, late on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Catalan justice department said that prison officers and medics had tried to save the life of a 75-year-old man but had been unsuccessful.

After attempts to save him failed, he was pronounced dead.“Judicial staff have been dispatched to the prison and are investigating the causes of death,” the statement said, adding: “Everything points to death by suicide.”McAfee’s lawyer on Wednesday told the Reuters news agency that McAfee had apparently hanged himself in his prison cell.

    Tax offenses

McAfee, the creator of the McAfee virus software , was arrested last October at Barcelona’s international airport as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul. At that time, a judge ordered that McAfee should be held in jail while awaiting the outcome of a hearing on extradition.

The arrest of the entrepreneur came a day after authorities had made public a US indictment stemming from his tax offense.

Tennessee prosecutors had charged McAfee with evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consultancy work, as well as income from speaking engagements and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary.

On Wednesday, Spain’s highest court had approved McAfee’s extradition to the United States, although the decision could be appealed and his final extradition would have had to be approved by the Spanish cabinet.

“The court agrees to grant the extradition of John David McAfee as requested by the American judicial authorities for the crimes referred to in the tax offense indictments for years 2016 to 2018,” read the 16-page ruling.

The ruling also made clear that the US charges referred to the three fiscal years from 2016 to 2018.In a hearing held via videolink earlier this month, McAfee had argued that the charges against him were politically motivated and said he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was returned to the US.

    Erratic behavior

Since making a fortune with his eponymous antivirus software in the 1980s that still bears his name, McAfee had engaged in increasingly erratic behavior, most recently as a self-styled cryptocurrency guru claiming to make $2,000 a day.In recent years, his personal life had drawn as much interest as his professional achievements.

He became the subject of frenzied media scrutiny following the unsolved 2012 murder of a neighbour in Belize. McAfee said he knew nothing about the murder, but was worried he may have been the attacker’s intended target.

When the police found him living with a 17-year-old girl and discovered a large arsenal of weapons in his home in the Central American country, McAfee disappeared on a month-long flight that drew breathless media coverage.

The dead neighbour’s family later filed a wrongful death suit against McAfee and last year a court in Florida found against him, ordering him to pay the family more than $25m.

In 2015, McAfee was arrested in the US for driving under the influence and possession of a gun while under the influence.
In July 2019, he was released from detention in the Dominican Republic after he and five others were suspected of travelling on a yacht carrying high-calibre weapons, ammunition and military-style gear, officials in the Caribbean island said at the time.

In March, he was charged in a Manhattan federal court over a pump and dump scheme involving cryptocurrencies he was promoting to his large social media following. In a tweet on 16 June, he said the US authorities believed he had “hidden crypto. I wish I did,” he said.“My remaining assets are all seized.

My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst This shortage is more dangerous one could think. Pandemic alone cant' be blamed. The issue is that there are not enough complex factories to manufacture them and the places where are made are few and in critical territories. One company (TSCM) makes more than fifty % of chips, and only one company (ASML) makes 91% of the machines that makes chips. This needs to change before becomes a worse issue, endangering not just the economy but even the geopolitical frame. Chips are more important than many commodities which have caused wars before.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst China was once the centre of the world or at least of the Asian world they knew then. It's growing again and Western economies don't understand properly how this is going to develop. Most probably China is going to surprise the world with new techs and ideas, in a Chinese economy ideology different from the rest. The centre of the world? Probably not. But the centre of all Asian and Pacific? Probably yes.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst Understanding the trends in blockchain and crypto is very important to see the global picture of the new digital economy. The changes in mining regulations, the regulations coming to many countries, and what is going with a crypto market which seems more a casino than another thing. Let's not forget that even if crypto would disappear today, the blockchain tech is already changing everything.

  • Watch: Bitcoin’s Money-Printing Machine Breaks Down as Futures Collapse
One of the most reliable trades in cryptocurrencies has gone awry.

Bitcoin futures, which typically trade at a premium to the spot price, have collapsed along the curve amid a brutal selloff in the world’s largest cryptocurrency. That’s obliterated what’s known as the basis trade, in which a trader would buy Bitcoin in the spot market today and sell long-dated futures, locking in the discrepancy between the two prices.

It’s a painful watershed for one of the crypto market’s most ubiquitous plays. Hedge funds piled into the trade, which could previously reliably produce double-digit annual gains. Even better, the arbitrage was virtually risk-free, given that CME Group Inc. is the counterparty. However, the trade existed because long-dated futures were more expensive than shorter-dated ones, given that Bitcoin is inherently scarce and theoretically should rise -- a structure known as contango. The breakdown of that dynamic implies that built-in bullishness has disappeared.

“That’s the very simple explanation, that contango is typically indicative of bullishness in the market and so to the extent that market participants are pessimistic, it makes sense to me that it’s broken down,” Nic Carter, founding partner at Castle Island Ventures, said by phone. “It could mean that some capital has just been structurally withdrawn from the market.”

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst When con tango disappears from a market usually the mood is bearish. This is happening with BTC and BTC futures. Unfortunately the market is vary variable and wild. BTC can remain as it is or literally go to zero in one day. Let's hope Crypto.2 is coming soon with a more sensible framework.

  • Recommended Watch: Homelessness Is Becoming A Crisis Of Epic Proportions In The ...
Can you imagine what your life would look like if you didn't have a home? For millions of Americans, this isn't something they need to imagine, because this is the reality they live in. Ever since health crisis' restrictions were put into place - triggering the widespread shutdown of U.S. businesses - unemployment rates have soared. In fact, America has seen an unemployment rate higher than at any time in the country’s history, including the Great Depression. As a multitude of workers started to struggle with job loss, many of them simply became unable to afford rent or mortgage payments. Millions are still at the brink of eviction, while others already lost their homes.
At this point, as the number of people without a home rapidly rose across the country, it has been hard to keep track of the real rate of homelessness. Recent estimates suggest that there are at least 1.5 million homeless people in the U.S., and over the past 12 months, even with the CDC's moratorium, that number never ceased to grow. While the wealthy engage in fierce bidding wars, pay over a million dollars above the asking price for a home, and purchase entire neighborhoods for a quick profit, affordable housing has become impossible to find. Rents have been ticking up too. And all of that is contributing to force more and more impoverished Americans into the streets with each passing day. What we're seeing in 2021 is rapidly becoming a crisis of epic proportions.
Believe it or not, this crisis is more severe in the wealthiest state of the nation. California’s homeless problem has been out of control for decades, but things have significantly worsened after the health crisis began. Approximately 160,000 homeless people currently live in the state, but many believe that the official figure is way too low. Even though California alone is known as an economic superpower, its high cost of living, lack of affordable housing, scattershot efforts with too many agencies, too much red tape, and the lack of a clear direction have all made tackling homelessness in the state even harder. However, the homelessness crisis is growing all over the country. What many Americans are failing to realize is that the reality of those who live in the streets right now is not so far away from those who live paycheck-to-paycheck. Sometimes, all it takes is one unexpected event to push a person straight into poverty.
With rich investors buying entire neighborhoods to transform them into rental units so that they can charge exceedingly high rent prices, and, on the other hand, low-income workers are effectively losing the opportunity to ever own a home due to this extremely competitive housing market, we're headed to a future where only those who can afford to pay expensive rents will have a roof over their heads. In case something happens and you lose your income, you might end up in the streets just as well. In about two weeks, the nationwide eviction moratorium will expire, and economists have been warning that millions more Americans could soon be forced out of their homes, in what they called an "eviction tsunami".
At least 5.7 million Americans, which represent almost 14% of all renters nationwide, had fallen behind on their rent in April. A study released by the National Equity Atlas exposed that tenants owed approximately $20 billion in rent, with low-income people among those worst affected. By May, over 40% of the 7 million tenants behind on rent at the time worried that they could be evicted in the next two months, according to the US Treasury. It's safe to say that now, the rate of tenants behind on rent payments is far greater.
This crisis is leaving a dark trail all over the nation. And even though some may argue that the government stimulus money may be helping these people, the truth is that the vast majority of the trillions that have been borrowed and spent over the past year were pumped into the financial system and never actually reached those who needed the most. Our leaders have managed to make life much harder for these people as inflation pressures have sent the price of everything up, and those at the very bottom of the economic food chain have been particularly hard-hit by rising prices. At this stage, it doesn't matter what politicians in Washington do, the homelessness crisis in the U.S. just seems to keep escalating. Millions of American citizens will sleep on the streets tonight, and many more will soon be joining them.SHOW LESS

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst When millions of citizens are let out from the economic system, it's more than a personal or community failure. It's also a sign that the system itself needs to be reviewed and changed if possible. What is happening in USA with their homeless is the result of a failing society and economic system.

Bitcoin is looking a little calmer today. But the question is when will the roller-coaster ride continue again?
Two months ago, the crypto-currency was worth nearly 65,000 dollars, the highest it's ever trade since being founding over a decade ago. But it's now back below 40,000. That’s around 40 percent less than where it was trading in mid-April. Critics say it's speculative and investors should stay away especially because of its volatility. The virtual currency has been on a wild ride. Its more recent highs and lows subject to the whims of entrepreneur, Elon Musk, whose support or criticism of Bitcoin can drive up the price or send it tumbling.

  • Highly Recommended Viewing: Bitcoin is a ‘fraud’, legitimate usage has declined ...
Watch part 1 of this interview on economic growth: https://youtu.be/oVyJ8_nBSD8

The non-illegal use cases of Bitcoin have not grown, in fact, they have declined in recent years, said Peter Berezin, chief global strategist at BCA Research.

Berezin told David Lin, anchor for Kitco News that Bitcoin is more likely to be a “fraud” than the future of legitimate investment.

“If you look at transactions involving Bitcoin, to this day, the majority continue to finance all sorts of illicit activities,” Berezin said. “But if you look at how much Bitcoin is used for legitimate business purposes, the answer is very, very little. In fact, some of the data that I showed during this debate with my colleague reveal that fewer transactions for legitimate business purchases are being made now than three years ago.”

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst Some people took DeFi like a free bank. Almost like gambling for profit. But DeFi has very high risks and even Mark Cuban, who some days before stated that Titan was a safe token (you know, the "I have done my homework here"), has lost money. Regulations (not control, but regulations) are needed in the digital economy.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst The fact is that there are many industries using more energy than BTC mining. But the issue here is that, life we can avoid more energy consumption in an era of Climate Change we should. The debate is huge indeed. This probably will lead to lower consumption mining for crypto in the next future.

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst Inspiring and amazing experiment in principle. Blockchain in audiovisual need successful use cases. If this is entered in a NFT platform which can monetise content in a blockchain, with users from the digital tokenised economy, maybe more interactive, more fan based. So many things which can happened from now onward.

As the material that makes all living things what/who we are, DNA is the key to understanding and changing the world. British geneticist Bryan Sykes and Francis Collins, director of the Human Genome Project, explain how, through gene editing, scientists can better treat illnesses, eradicate diseases, and revolutionize personalized medicine.

But existing and developing gene editing technologies are not without controversies. A major point of debate deals with the idea that gene editing is overstepping natural and ethical boundaries. Just because they can, does that mean that scientists should edit DNA?

Harvard professor Glenn Cohen introduces another subcategory of gene experiments: mixing human and animal DNA. "The question is which are okay, which are not okay, why can we generate some principles," Cohen says of human-animal chimeras and arguments concerning improving human life versus morality.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:

    0:00 Intro
0:41 Bryan Sykes, What We Need to Know About Genes
3:24 Francis Collins, Linking Genes to Disease
8:39 Glenn Cohen, Crossing Human Genes With Animals

BRYAN SYKES: Genetics and DNA does get to the central issue of what makes us tick. It's perhaps too determinist to say that your genes determine everything you do. They don't, but, if you like, it's like the deck of cards that you're dealt at birth. What you do with that deck, like any card game, depends a lot on your choices, but it is influenced by those cards, those genes that you got when you were born.

What I've enjoyed about genetics is looking to see what it tells us about where we've come from because those pieces of DNA, they came from somewhere. They weren't just sort of plucked out of the air. They came from ancestors. And it's a very good way of finding out about your ancestors, not only who they are, but just imagining their lives. You're made up of DNA from thousands and millions of ancestors who've lived in the past, most of them now dead, but they've survived, they've got through, they've passed their DNA onto their children, and it's come down to you. It doesn't matter who you are. You could be the President. You could be the Prime Minister. You could be the head of a big corporation. You could be a taxi driver. You could be someone who lives on the street. But the same is true of everybody. I can see a time, long after I've gone but when, in fact, everyone will know their relationship to everybody else. It is possible, if anybody wants to do it or can afford it, you could actually, I think, draw the family tree of the entire world by linking up the segments of DNA. So you could find out in what way everyone was related to everybody else.

No doubt, most of the funding for the advances in genetics, for example, the complete sequencing of the human genome, has come from ambition to learn more about health issues. The technology for exploring that, which is making leaps and bounds, has come through the healthcare benefits. Those are the two main things that people are learning about themselves and who they're related to, where they've come from. And that does, and I know from experience, that does add a lot to people's sense of identity. It's not for everybody, not everyone's very interested in it, but a lot of people are and I think that's a very good thing.

FRANCIS COLLINS: It's too bad that you can't actually see DNA easily under a microscope and scan across the double-helix and read out of the sequence of bases that amounts to the information content because it would be easier, I think, to explain then how a geneticist goes about tracking down the molecular bases of a disease at the DNA level. Our methods are indirect. They're very powerful, they're very highly accurate, but they're not as visual as you might like. We do have methods though now that allow you to read out with high accuracy all 3 billion of the letters of the DNA instruction book. Those letters are actually these chemical bases. The chemical language of DNA is a simple one. There's only four letters in the alphabet. Those bases that we abbreviate, A, C, G, and T. And we have methods of being able to compare then the DNA sequence of people who have a disease versus people who don't and look for the critical differences in order to nail down something that might be the cause. Well, since, however, we all differ in our DNA sequence by about a half of 1%, you wouldn't get very far if you basically...

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst We can play with genes with out actual technology. But, should we do it? What are the limits that we, citizens of the 21st century, allow ourselves ethically? Some are already calling for a Global Council of Ethics which would rule about the ethical issues brought by genetic experiments. What do you think?

How love makes us feel can only be defined on an individual basis, but what it does to the body, specifically the brain, is now less abstract thanks to science.

One of the problems with early-stage attraction, according to anthropologist Helen Fisher, is that it activates parts of the brain that are linked to drive, craving, obsession, and motivation, while other regions that deal with decision-making shut down.

Dr. Fisher, professor Ted Fischer, and psychiatrist Gail Saltz explain the different types of love, explore the neuroscience of love and attraction, and share tips for sustaining relationships that are healthy and mutually beneficial.

    TRANSCRIPT:

During romantic or passionate love, you're gonna feel the sense of being addicted to your partner.

People who are madly in love can fall madly in love with somebody who's married, who lives on the other side of the planet, who comes from a different religion. And somehow, they'll say to themselves, we'll work it out, we can work this out. Because of all that energy of intense romantic love.

Over time, as this whole neurotransmitter thing settles out, what's left?

TED FISCHER: We define romantic love as an intense desire for another, with the expectation that it's gonna persist into the future. And that distinguishes it from lust, which is generally fleeting, and also for more companionship love, which doesn't have that intensity of desire, that you want to possess the other in some way.

GAIL SALTZ: Studies have looked at activity in the brain when recalling passionate or romantic love, versus say maternal love, and finds that different centers definitely are more active. And they would, say, put people into the functional MRI, and they said, think about your partner, or think about your lover. And certain areas lit up, or they said, think about your mom, and different areas lit up. Which is important, because different areas are responsible for the release of different neurotransmitters. Which then come to affect your future feeling states and future behaviors. During romantic or passionate love, what happens from a neurotransmitter standpoint, those chemicals that are released when you have that particular experience? Dopamine goes up. Dopamine is essentially the neurotransmitter of reward. So it is a neurotransmitter that's released when you have new or novel experience, but particularly experiences that are reinforcing. Like gambling. Or something that is really addictive. In fact, literally addictive. It's the neurotransmitter if you snorted cocaine that is most responsible for, wow, that was great, and I totally wanna do it again. So that is a neurotransmitter that definitely goes up when you are in the throes of romantic or passionate love. And what does that mean for you? It means that you're gonna feel the sense of being addicted to your partner. And in fact, it's also the neurotransmitter that goes up for people who have obsessive compulsive disorder. Does that mean you're gonna develop OCD? No. But what it does mean is you're probably going to obsess over your partner. In comes another neurotransmitter, that's called serotonin. It is definitely a neurotransmitter that is active for obsessive compulsive disorder. And for depression. Do you become depressed? No, you really don't. But what you do do is a feature of depression called rumination. So you think about your partner over and over and over again in this really obsessive manner. And, if your partner is separated from you, you're going to have this longing, where you're wanting to be with them, kind of like you'd want to be with a drug if it was taken away from you and you were already addicted to it.

There are changes in other neurotransmitters as well. So if you're physically with your partner, the neurotransmitter oxytocin, which is kind of known as the cuddle neurotransmitter, and that makes you feel warm, and snuggly, and intensely bonded to this person. It is particularly released following orgasm. So, you know, if you're having sex with your partner, and things go well, you're gonna feel very...

Francisco Gimeno - BC Analyst The world works around love (and money!), and emotions. Science (like in here) will help us to understand what our organism and brain do when we feel in love. We are intelligent biological organisms, attached to our biological (and neural) impulses. But this is just the foundation. Love and feelings in a conscious being goes beyond this.
