Communications apps that strike a chord with users across different
markets are hot property these days, and it looks like another one of
them may soon enter the so-called unicorn club. TechCrunch has learned that Truecaller — a caller ID app that now has 150 million users — is looking to raise around $100 million at a $1 billion valuation.


We’re hearing that Truecaller has hired Morgan Stanley to lead the
process, and there are term sheets out. The round is likely to
have previous and new investors.
To date, True Software, maker of Truecaller, has raised around $80 million. Previous investors include Atomico, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sequoia Capital, Access Partners and Open Ocean.
The plan will be to use the funds to grow the product. Truecaller,
founded in Sweden, has seen a lot of traction in markets like India, its
biggest market at 80 million users. Now it wants to expand elsewhere,
like the U.S., and will be building out the company’s office in the Bay
Area.

The company is projected to hit 300 million users this year.
Truecaller works by aggregating directory services via deals with
white pages companies, and platforms like Yelp to bring in businesses.
It complements this with crowdsourced information from the app’s users.


That includes accessing your own address book, although you can opt out.
Individual users can also opt out from being listed.
It then uses big data analytics and machine learning to offer
additional services beyond caller ID such as predicting who you might
want to call next based on where you are and what time of day it is, or
what the top-reported spam number is in your area at the moment.

These, by way of background, are Everlane’s often hotly anticipated
upcoming items.
Currently, that list includes things like its Petra backpacks, wool
wide-leg trousers, mercerized tees, and more. From the app, users can
join the waitlist for these items, which tend to sell quickly.
Explains the company: “because we believe the app offers a superior
shopping experience, we want to incentivize our best customers to use
it.”
 
That’s actually an interesting trick, and one that isn’t something
commonly seen on mobile today. Many apps, including those outside the
e-commerce space, just try to build mobile-friendly versions of their
web experience. They don’t seem to realize that – assuming they’re not a
big company like Facebook, Google or Amazon – their app will likely
only appeal to and be heavily used by their most zealous customers and
fans.

1. Signups and Emails

If
you have a newsletter, push it through your app. There’s nothing wrong
with having an app that drives consumers to your website. It may not be
the easiest thing to track, but it works. Remember that your app is just
another leg of your brand chair. It does not have to survive on its own
but does need to add value to your audience. – Brendon Schenecker, Travel Vegas

2. VIP Levels of App Useage

I
think that having two versions of your app, a free/cheap version and a
paid version is important. It’s part of the strategy of giving your
customers a taste — a trial period to get a sense of all that your app
can do — and then building from there. You want your customers to
integrate this app into their lives and then realize they can’t live
without it when it comes time to upgrade. Beefing up your upgrades is a
big way to establish your product’s importance and value to your

The app revolution is dead. In fact, it died years ago.
It had been a good run, but a revolution is no longer a revolution when the model is the status quo. With new apps created every day, the revolution has definitely been televised, commoditized and capitalized.


But while the app revolution is dead, a new movement is rising to take its place — the experience evolution.
With so many apps available, the ones that truly change the game extend beyond the device and change how you experience everyday tasks and activities. Take Uber for example, their app isn’t game-changing, but evolving the experience of taking a cab is powerful enough to disrupt an entire industry.

And now wearables are doing the same thing.
Wearables are where the experience evolution kicks into high gear, but there’s one more piece to the
experience evolution that is perhaps even more important for developers
and organizations to keep in mind: How you experience something depends
on where you experience it. Have you ever tried to read an e-book on an
iPad in the bright sun? If so, you know what I mean.


This notion of where you experience an app
as a fundamental principle came crashing home for me a few years ago
when I spent some time in Kenya working with a number of Salesforce
Foundation customers who were looking to build mobile applications on the Salesforce1 Platform.
My colleagues and I toured the Kibera slums where a customer was bringing clean toilets to the
millions of inhabitants.

Each toilet was managed by a franchise and run
as a business. Part of that business was tracking usage to ensure
adequate toilet distribution and waste removal schedules. The franchise tracked all of this using paper and pen.
I suggested it would be more efficient with a mobile app. The implementation partner quickly reminded me that we were in the middle of a slum in Kenya ­and you would get mugged for a mobile device faster than you could say “iPhone.”
I remember nodding my head.

I could write the best app in the world; it would have amazing user experience and save people countless hours shuffling paper around. But I forget where the user would experience the app. Failing to do so will doom any app to the digital wasteland....continue reading...
